European University Viadrina

The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) is a young, reform-oriented university that placed internationalisation at the core of its mission.

Situated at the German-Polish border, it was re-established after German reunification with the special mission to foster European integration by building bridges and promoting dialogue with its neighbour Poland and other Eastern European countries. This mission was accomplished by becoming a recognized institution for education and research on Europe, European integration, border studies and migration.

It has evolved into a platform for political and social dialogue with the cross-border region, while also serving as a space for experimenting with innovative challenge-based teaching and learning methods.

The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) is a place where inclusion is prioritized, providing access to underrepresented groups and empowering women to reach leading positions in science and society.

What does being part of ERUA mean for us?

“For us as the European University Viadrina, which sees itself as a reform university, full membership is both an honour and an incentive to contribute our European expertise as an innovative and inclusive institution. It also inspires us to further strengthen our international research collaboration and expand mobility opportunities for all members of our university.”

Prof Dr Eduard Mühle, President of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder)

  • expanding and deepening international cooperation in mobility, education and research
  • collaborating on reform-oriented teaching and learning formats driven by challenge-based approaches, advancing key competences such as communication, intercultural skills, conflict resolution, digital literacy and multilingualism
  • promoting empowerment, engagement and active participation of our students within the international and intercultural ERUA environment
  • Training global citizens equipped to work across borders, with an inclusive approach to innovation, entrepreneurship and research to address the challenges of today for the benefit of future generations.

What are our research priorities?

We are specialized in the Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly in the field of European Studies, which we approach from various disciplinary perspectives, including political science, cultural studies, law and economics. Our transfaculty interdisciplinary research centres specialize in areas such as Polish studies, migration, borders, conflict management and digital transformation.

What are we known for?

We have been consistently been ranked among the top-five most international universities in Germany by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and have repeatedly secured high positions in the Student Satisfaction Survey conducted by the German Centre for University Development (CHE).

Our location is integral to our mission. Since our founding, we have been building bridges between Eastern and Western Europe, a commitment we embraced well before EU enlargement. Viadrina shares the European vision of the twin cities in which it is located, Frankfurt (Oder) (Germany) – Słubice (Poland).

Viadrina is one of the few universities in Germany to exceed the EU goal of having over 50% of its students study abroad. In addition to exchange programs, we offer more than 20 integrated double degree programs and our practice of recognizing foreign credits has received multiple awards.

More than 30% of Viadrina students come from abroad, representing more than 100 countries.

Who are our international partners?

Since our re-establishment, we have developed a strong partnership with the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, featuring joint study programs, research collaborations and a joint scientific institution.

Our university boarsts a network of more than 280 international partner universities across all five continents, engaging in institutional cooperation in research and teaching, with 75% of these institutions located in Europe. Of particular importance is the cooperation with universities from the countries of the so-called Weimar Triangle, namely France and Poland.

We are proud members of the European University Association (EUA) and of the International Network of Universities (INU)
