This practice-oriented seminar introduces a variety of methods from the growing field of Digital Humanities. The focus is placed on the reflective application of digital methods, from data acquisition to analysis, visualisation and communication of research.
• When does it make sense to collect data, and when is it appropriate to use archives and publicly available corpora?
• What to do with data once acquired?
• How to pick the right approach for data and research aim and how to structure a study in the DH?
The seminar can be attended remotely and at whichever time frame suits you. All content (including theoretical concepts, tutorials for methods, and relevant literature) will be made available in individual thematic sections. Optional live sessions are offered on a regular basis to practice a selection of methods and to go over any questions or queries.
Some of the topics you will encounter in this course include: work with (social) media, constructing a corpus, qualitative and quantitative text analysis, video annotation, network analysis, etc. In order to complete the course with up to 6 ECTS, students are asked to submit topic-specific tasks. These can be worked on during the optional live sessions; group work is possible.
