What happens when science opens its doors to society?
Join us on 14 October 2026, from 16:00 to 18:00 CET, for an online ERUA seminar on citizen science, “Opening Science to Society: The What, Why, and How of Citizen Science”, featuring Prof. Uta Wehn, Professor of Citizen Science and Sustainability at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and Centre for Science & Technology Studies of Leiden University.
Hosted online, by the University of the Aegean, this seminar is organised under ERUA Work Package 3, as part of the activities supporting Early Career Researchers across the Alliance. It will introduce participants to citizen science as an approach to opening research and innovation to wider society, combining conceptual perspectives with practical considerations.

The session is designed for PhD students and Early Career Researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences from all ERUA universities and associated partner institutions. Researchers from across the ERUA regions are warmly invited to join!

The seminar will be delivered by Prof. Uta Wehn, Professor of Citizen Science and Sustainability at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and CWTS – Centre for Science & Technology Studies, Leiden University. The concept and growing relevance of citizen science will be explored, while considering how it can be translated from a promising approach into research practice.
The following thematic areas will be covered:
- What is citizen science? A journey into citizen science beyond the hype
- Why does citizen science matter? Where is the renewed interest in citizen science coming from?
- How does it work? From promise to practice
Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with Prof. Wehn and discuss questions arising from the seminar, at the Q&A session that will follow.
