About the program
This course explores how Latin American culture maneuvers through global systems of exclusion. By using digital activism to oppose epistemic silence and reclaim suppressed voices and knowledge of migrants, Indigenous populations, and racialized minorities, you will examine how migrants utilize digital platforms to assert their presence in societies that marginalize them.
During the course, you will conduct a digital visibility audit of the “New Latino Boom.” For example, you will:
- Create missing entries (e.g., “New Latino Boom,” “El efecto Luiselli”) from scratch.
- Translate and adapt biographies of key figures (e.g., Valeria Luiselli).
- Update digital sources with current academic research to democratize knowledge about migration and culture.
What will you learn?
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Analyze the mechanisms of cultural/digital exclusion and the role of migration as a catalyst for new movements like the #NewLatinoBoom.
- Define the “New Latino Boom”, “Luiselli Effect” and “Digital Activism” within the context of global cultural flows and linguistic politics.
- Critically assess inclusion strategies in global pop culture (e.g., the Bad Bunny phenomenon).
- Execute a digital activism project by filling “Knowledge Gaps” on Wikipedia, thereby countering epistemic exclusion.
- Contribute to Open Science by applying academic standards to open-access digital platforms.
- Collaborate effectively in a multicultural and multilingual online environment, developing advanced digital literacy and “Knowledge Activism” skill.
Who should attend?
The course is open to all students interested in digital culture, media, and Latin American/Latinx studies. To reflect the ERUA spirit, linguistic diversity among participants is highly encouraged.

- Weekly time commitment: 3 hours per week
