Registration deadline: 23 July 2026
The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the ERUA intensive course “Liaison Interpreting: Collaborative and Cooperative Learning for Interpreting Contexts in Under-represented Public Services”, a training programme focusing on interpreting in public services and intercultural communication in multilingual contexts.
The programme is coordinated by Heather Adams and Agustín Darias Marrero, lecturers at the School of Translation and Interpreting, and aims to provide students with practical experience in skills related to liaison interpreting, linguistic mediation and intercultural communication.
Course Content
The course combines theoretical and practical sessions with workshops and simulation exercises based on real-life situations involving interpreters in public services. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to work on scenarios relating to areas such as:
- health services
- law enforcement agencies
- public administration
- education
- and contexts involving support for migrants and multicultural communities
As well as exploring liaison interpreting techniques in greater depth, the programme will cover aspects such as note-taking, oral communication, non-verbal language and strategies for managing complex intercultural communication situations.
Methodology
One of the distinctive features of this initiative is its focus on collaborative and co-operative learning. Students will work in international teams, take part in simulations and develop training materials to be used during the various practical sessions.
The activity will also provide an opportunity to exchange experiences with students and staff from other ERUA universities, thereby fostering the development of intercultural and professional skills in a multilingual environment.
Evaluation
Assessment will be based on:
- active participation in the course activities
- attendance at and completion of the practical sessions
- completion of a final evaluation questionnaire
Participation in the course will earn students 3 ECTS credits.
