The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the ERUA intensive course ‘Entry into Force of the Migration and Asylum Pact and Vulnerabilities at Borders: Towards a Vision of Migration Committed to Human Rights’, an international training programme that will analyse the challenges and opportunities arising from the entry into force of the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum from a human rights-centred perspective.
The event is organised by ERUA’s Borders and Vulnerability Reproduction Cluster and will bring together lecturers and researchers from various universities within the alliance to address, through an interdisciplinary approach, some of the key current debates on migration, borders, reception policies and international protection.
Course Content
Over the course of five days, participants will have the opportunity to explore in depth the social, political and legal implications of the implementation of the new European framework on migration and asylum, as well as the challenges it poses for the protection of fundamental rights.
Key topics to be addressed include:
- the political and social context of the pact’s implementation
- the European legal framework on migration and asylum
- narratives on migration in the European public debate
- the practical implementation of the new measures in various European Union countries
- the impact of these policies on migrants and other vulnerable groups
Methodology
In addition to the academic sessions, the programme will include practical activities and meetings with institutions and organisations working in the fields of migration and social issues.
The planned activities include:
- a visit to Casa África;
- meetings with professionals and organisations working with migrant children;
- an introduction to support services for young people leaving care;
- forums for debate and collective reflection on migration policies and human rights.
Evaluation
Assessment will be based on:
- a preliminary analysis of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum (20%);
- active participation in course discussions and activities (50%);
- the drafting of final conclusions and critical reflection (30%).
Participation in the course will earn students 3 ECTS credits.
Entry requirements
The course is open to undergraduate, master’s and PhD students from any discipline, with no specific prior knowledge of migration or law required.
