From 1 – 5 June 2026, Paris 8 University will host a five-day intensive course, with 2 on-line sessions, titled “Research-Creation Methodologies: Interdisciplinarity, Societal Impact, and Co-Production of Knowledge” offering ERUA PhD candidates an immersive exploration of the research-creation field and practices.

Description of the course

This intensive doctoral seminar (20 hours) offers a comprehensive introduction to research-creation methodologies in today’s academic context. Through theoretical approaches, case studies, and collaborations with research-creation institutions, the seminar aims to provide participants with practical tools to understand, position, and develop research-creation projects that combine creative practices, knowledge production, interdisciplinarity, and societal impact.

The seminar aims to help participants:

  • Understand what research-creation means in the current academic context.
  • Analyse interdisciplinary methodologies that combine creation, research, and experimentation.
  • Understand institutional, partnership-based, and extra-university structures that support research-creation.
  • Reflect on and critically position their own research approach.

The seminar also includes collaboration with research-creation institutions, notably Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers and Campus Condorcet. These partnerships will allow doctoral students to explore research ecosystems beyond the university, analyse concrete projects, and reflect on collaboration between academic, artistic, and sociocultural institutions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Situate research-creation within contemporary academic debates and practices.
  • Design and articulate an interdisciplinary research methodology combining creative practice, research, and experimentation.
  • Develop participatory and collaborative approaches adapted to their research context.
  • Position and communicate their own doctoral project within a research-creation framework, both conceptually and methodologically.

Assessement methods

Assessment will be based on active participation, continuous engagement, and the development of the participants’ individual research-creation projects:

  • Active participation and contribution : attendance, involvement in discussions, group work, and workshops throughout the seminar.
  • Project development and methodological reflection : submission of a short written or visual-conceptual document outlining the participant’s research-creation approach.
  • Final presentation : oral presentation of the participant’s project, including its methodological framework, societal impact, and potential collaborations.

Why You Should Apply?

This seminar offers an opportunity to develop your research project at the intersection of creative practice and academic research. It is designed for students and researchers who wish to explore innovative methodologies, engage with interdisciplinary approaches, and critically reflect on the societal impact of their work. You will also receive feedback on your work through group discussions, workshops, and presentations.
