Building Intercultural Competence in Higher Education: ERUA Staff Week at SWPS University

From July 21st to 25th, SWPS University hosted a successful Staff Training Week in Warsaw as part of ERUA’s Work Package 4 (WP4)Intercultural Competence in Higher Education. The event took place on the university’s Warsaw campus and brought together 18 administrative staff members from all eight ERUA partner institutions.

The training, led by Prof. Agnieszka Golińska, business psychologist and certified Assessment and Development Center (AC/DC) assessor, was structured as an intensive workshop designed to foster intercultural awareness and competence. Prof. Golińska, an expert in organizational behavior, guided participants through interactive sessions focused on navigating cultural diversity in higher education settings.

The program was specifically targeted at staff members who engage daily with international students — including those working in student services, enrollment offices, welcome desks, and mobility support. Throughout the week, participants exchanged best practices, explored common challenges in multicultural environments, and deepened their understanding of intercultural dynamics.

The training also included a guided campus visit on the first day and a cultural tour of Warsaw on Thursday, offering participants the opportunity to better connect with both the host institution and each other.

This initiative reflects ERUA’s strong commitment to building inclusive and globally-minded university environments. It directly responds to Task 4.1 of WP4, which calls for bringing together mobility and student support offices and equipping them with intercultural training – a crucial step in ensuring quality support services for international students across the alliance.

Participants returned to their home universities with enhanced intercultural skills, new tools, and valuable peer networks, ready to apply their learning to their daily work and continue strengthening the ERUA community.
