ERUA and Paris 8 University are announcing an intensive course Another Version of Myselfthat will take place in Paris 8 University, between the 9th  and the 15th of June.

Stepping aside from oneself also allows us to be another version of ourselves – which opens a wide range of possibilities. This workshop will seek to encourage participants to dig a little and play with this idea of “other versions of me”. There is a strong potential for creativity in language learning.

This 6-day workshop offers an immersive exploration of puppet acting in English, blending theory, practical exercises, and creative activities. Participants will delve into the rich history of European puppetry, examining its evolution and various styles, such as puppet theatre, hand puppets, Muppets, table puppets, and Bunraku-style puppets. The workshop also covers the iconic puppet characters that have traveled across Europe for centuries, including Punch, Karragoz, Polichinelle, and Pucinella. Through role-plays and small scenes, participants will have the chance to bring these characters to life and explore their diverse interpretations. Each day, attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their learning and practice by maintaining a “journal de bord.” This combination of theory, group work, and hands-on activities promises a dynamic and engaging experience for all participants.

Why You Should Apply:

The art of puppetry, when we think about it for a moment, is very similar to the process that is at hand in language learning. The puppet is another version of the actor, a version that would like to be in the forefront, just for a moment. A “brief candle”!

Digital tools and online learning have also revolutionized the way we learn and teach today. However, it has sometimes resulted in leaving aside face-to-face activities, which actually involve much more than the face (and voice).

This workshop will be a key moment, a play area for students who would like to practice their oral skills in a cheerful and daring way and who are ready to experience this sense of strangeness –stepping outside one’s comfort zone- in order to improve their skills as well as to look at the process of learning itself.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop speaking skills in English especially through interaction, negotiation and collaboration
  • Discover the complex art of puppetry and its mysterious ways (history, purpose, genres, cultural aspects, etc.)

  • Explore the various and potential paths of one’s identity
  • Collaboration: explore group manipulation of puppets and the “Devised Theatre” method
  • Work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Reflect on the process of learning and of language learning through the practice of Diary or ‘journal de Bord’
  • Boost self-confidence when speaking a foreign language

Assessment methods:

Students will be evaluated continuously based on the ongoing activities. Upon the successful completion of the course 3 ECTS will be awarded.

Who can apply:

The course is open for 12 ERUA students. A B1 level in English is required.
