ERUA took part in the HEIF Early Adopters community meeting, held online on 21 September 2026. The meeting gathered universities, European Universities alliances and other organisations in the Higher Education Interoperability Framework (HEIF) Early Adopters Programme, which is led by the European Digital Education Hub (EDEH).
Newly selected Early Adopters met the existing community and discussed how the network can support their HEIF use cases. The agenda covered the opportunities open to Early Adopters, presentations on milestones and impact, a Q&A and next steps.
The ERUA Digital Campus Case
ERUA IT team representatives from the University of the Aegean presented the Alliance’s ongoing work towards “Building a Seamless Digital Campus Across Eight Universities”. Rather than replacing the different identity systems, learning platforms and recognition processes already used by ERUA universities, the work focuses on connecting them through a common digital layer.
At the core of this effort is ERUA-iD, the Alliance-wide digital identity that enables students and staff to access services across participating universities. Building on this, ERUA is developing and integrating shared digital services, including common learning environments and collaboration tools, while working towards a smoother cross-university student journey.
A key part of the ongoing work is also digital recognition and portability of learning achievements. ERUA is implementing badges, micro-credentials and verifiable credentials, enabling students to receive digitally verifiable evidence of their learning, keep it in a personal digital wallet, and present it to other ERUA institutions for verification and recognition.
Together, these activities aim to create a Digital Campus where students can access services, participate in learning opportunities across universities, and carry their achievements with them, despite the different underlying systems used by each institution.
The presentation also highlighted a number of important lessons. Successful interoperability is not only a technical matter; it also depends on adoption, user experience and clear, tangible benefits for students and staff. In practice, this means explaining the value of an alliance-level identity, aligning processes across eight institutions, and designing services around concrete user needs. Building on this experience, the team emphasised the value of starting from real student journeys, involving students and staff in testing from an early stage, and approaching identity, services and credentials as interconnected elements of one digital ecosystem from the outset.
The next step is to test a full journey, from identity and course discovery to credential issuance and recognition, showcasing the findings with the HEIF community.
Taking part in this network matters for ERUA. It puts the alliance’s work in front of other EUI alliances, institutions and EDEH, and it gives ERUA access to HEIF Hub resources, clinics and webinars for its own use cases.
This builds on existing cooperation with Una Europa and FilmEU in the EBSI Early Adopters University Alliances cluster, and it raises the profile of ERUA and the University of the Aegean in European digital higher education. ERUA will keep contributing to the community and to the wider discussion on interoperable digital solutions across the European Universities landscape.
