The University of the Aegean is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts for the 2nd ERUA Biennale “Arts & Edges”, taking place in person on the island of Lesvos, Greece, May 28-30, 2027.
The Biennale is open to Faculty members, Post-doctoral researchers, Doctoral and Master’s students from ERUA member and associate institutions, researchers and artists collaborating with these institutions, as well as local organisations and social actors from ERUA regions, working in relevant fields.
Members of the academic, artistic, social, and local communities are encouraged to engage with the Biennale from its early stages and contribute to a shared space for experimentation, dialogue, networking, and creative inquiry around the many dimensions of Arts & Edges.

Thematic Areas
At the heart of this initiative is the concept of edge, which is inherently interdisciplinary and multidimensional. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to read carefully the Conceptual Framework and the Call, before submitting their proposal.
Proposals related to Arts & Edges may integrate at least one of the following areas:
- Migration, Exile, Refugees and Borders
- Environmental Transition
- Democracy, Human Rights, Inclusion, and Gender Equality
- Culture, Interculturality, and Multilingualism
- Cutting-Edge Issues in Public Space
- Innovative Practices : from Research to Education
- Interventions and Experiments in Local Societies
Objectives
The three-day, in-person “Arts & Edges” ERUA Biennale aims to:
- Further connect research and education within the ERUA community on issues related to the arts and the concept of the edge.
- Promote interdisciplinary dialogue on the nature of the edge and its relevance to ERUA’s diverse contexts, interests, and activities. ERUA brings together universities across Europe’s East and West, North and South, encompassing diverse socio-economic, geographical, and cultural contexts. These institutions and their communities stand “on a critical edge” in terms of values, geography, and social diversity.
- Highlight the role of the arts in addressing social challenges and fostering social change.
- Explore connections between the arts and sustainability, connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Present case studies and practices demonstrating how the intersection of the arts and different conceptualizations of the edge can contribute to innovation within ERUA and its local communities.
Participation Formats
Formats may include presentations, workshops, performances, exhibitions, screenings, roundtables, participatory interventions, site-specific practices, collaborative laboratories, and other exploratory forms of engagement.
Abstract submission
Proposals must include an abstract (up to 500 words), up to 6 keywords, and a short author biography (up to 250 words).
Please submit your proposal after reading carefully the Call and the Conceptual Framework, by 15 February 2027, 23:59 (CET):
Presenters will also have the opportunity to submit their full papers after the Biennale for inclusion in the proceedings volume, in accordance with the submission guidelines they will receive.
