About the program

The course provides an introduction to the foundations of art therapy and the role of creative expression in supporting emotional well-being. You will be introduced to the most popular art therapy techniques and methods, such as expressive painting, intuitive drawing, collage, journaling and symbolic imagery. We will also address various aspects of art therapy, including working with emotions through art, understanding the connection between visual expression and inner experience, and using creativity as a form of self-care.

Format

The course combines theoretical lectures with practical workshops, which allow participants to explore how art can function as a tool for emotional regulation, mindfulness, and personal growth. In addition to the hands-on artistic activities, the program includes guided mindfulness exercises, short meditative practices, and both individual and group work sessions.

To successfully complete the course you will be expected to present your art, participate actively in all forms of instruction and write a reflective essay.

What will you learn

Upon the completion of the course, you will:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts and principles of art therapy, including its theoretical background and applications in well-being and emotional support.
  • Express and explore emotions through artistic processes, using visual language as a tool for self-reflection and communication.
  • Apply selected art therapy techniques and methods such as expressive painting, intuitive drawing, collage, journaling and symbolic imagery.
  • Develop self-awareness and mindfulness skills, integrating creative practices with basic meditative and grounding exercises.
  • Work effectively both individually and in groups, engaging in collaborative creative tasks and reflective discussions.
  • Gain introductory competences for facilitating simple creative exercises that support emotional expression and well-being in various contexts.
  • Enhance creativity, openness, and personal expression through hands-on artistic experimentation.

  2. Cover letter describing why you would like to participate in the course and what is your interest in art and creativity (max. 1 page)
  3. CEFR B2 English proficiency — no certificate necessary

Funding

Students from ERUA partner universities, other than SWPS University, who are accepted to the program by SWPS University, can apply for travel and accommodation funding at their home university’s ERUA Office.
