International Women’s Day is often a moment for celebration and reflection. Across the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), this year’s message invites us to look beyond a single day and recognise the everyday impact of women within universities and beyond.
Through the campaign “Women’s Day: Every Day,” ERUA highlights women from across its partner institutions and communities — researchers, educators, administrators, students, innovators and alumni. Their experiences show how women contribute to research, leadership and institutional life, while continuing to navigate environments that are gradually becoming more inclusive.

Spaces for dialogue, creativity and knowledge
Across disciplines such as sociology, law, communication and the arts, women play an important role in shaping how ideas circulate within academia and society. The qoutes highlight the importance of spaces where dialogue, creativity and critical thinking can flourish — environments that allow complex social questions to be explored openly.
At the same time, the women across academic fields speak about the persistence required to gain recognition and visibility. Role models, supportive networks and the courage to remain present in academic spaces continue to make a difference for many scholars.

Rethinking leadership
These women working in research, innovation and institutional management describe leadership as a balance between strategic thinking and human understanding. Beyond achieving results, leadership is seen to build trust, encouraging collaboration and creating environments where diverse perspectives can contribute to decision-making.
In fields ranging from innovation to public administration, this combination of analytical thinking and awareness of social context is seen as strengthening institutions and the policies they shape.

Research driven by curiosity and care
Within ERUA universities, women researchers are helping expand the questions that guide contemporary scholarship. Many emphasise research that considers issues such as social justice, sustainability and care, encouraging approaches that look beyond traditional frameworks.
At the same time, discussions around research culture increasingly acknowledge structural inequalities that still exist within academia. Recognising these patterns is widely seen as an important step toward building more inclusive and equitable research environments.

Beyond academia
The ERUA community extends well beyond university campuses. Alumni and professionals working in sectors such as aviation, culture, entrepreneurship and public administration highlight how academic experiences continue to shape their careers.
In many cases, women entering traditionally male-dominated fields emphasise the importance of expertise, confidence and perseverance in challenging long-standing assumptions and opening new opportunities.

Supporting the next generation
Across the ERUA network, mentorship and encouragement are seen as essential for future generations. Young researchers and professionals are encouraged to remain curious, explore different paths and build supportive networks.
Progress rarely follows a perfect path, and many women emphasise the importance of resilience, learning from experience and trusting one’s perspective.

A contribution that continues every day
Taken together, the reflections we have shared over the week offer a portrait of the inspiring impact women have in academia and other sectors, that extends well beyond research outputs and professional titles. They speak of mentorship, perseverance, collaboration and intellectual curiosity. They also reveal the structural challenges that continue to shape academic and professional environments, as well as the determination of those who reshape them every day.
Across ERUA universities and regions, women lead, coordinate and support research projects, institutional and business work, bringing new perspectives every day.
International Women’s Day may offer a moment of recognition, but the contributions it celebrates continue throughout the year, every day.
