Winter School: “Envy, Greed and Jealousy. (The Psychoanalytic Paradigm)”

ERUA and New Bulgarian University (NBU) are announcing a Winter School: Envy, Greed and Jealousy. (The Psychoanalytic Paradigm)that will take place at NBU, between the 21st and the 23rd of November 2025.

The Winter School of psychoanalysis will focus on envy, greed and jealousy, especially in societies in transformation or crisis. A panel of seminars will be dedicated to the history of psychoanalysis in Bulgaria during the communism and after its collapse. There will be a special walk in Sofia through places related to psychoanalytic activities. The program of the School also features a panel dedicated to the link between arts (and especially post-communist cinema) and psychoanalysis.

The School is organized by Psychoanalytic Trio: NaViGo based in NBU. NaViGo unites Prof. Svetlozar Vassilev, a therapist and a professor of psychoanalysis, Albena Stambolova, PhD, a therapist and a writer, and Prof. Georgi Gochev, a classical philologist and a writer.

This is the second edition of the School.

The first one was held in Paris in April 2024 under the title “European Capitals of Psychoanalysis: Paris”.

The Winter School will present an innovative mixture of lectures, seminars and experiential learning, while introducing a new psychoanalytic method of exploring the viewers’ experience (when watching a movie).

Learning outcomes:

The participants will learn more about history of psychoanalysis in Bulgaria and Eastern European societies during the communist regime and in the transition to democracy. They will also be challenged to learn more about their own experience related to phenomena such as envy, greed and jealousy.

Assessment:

The course assessment will be based on submitting a final essay.

Upon successful completion, the course will award 3 ECTS.

 

Who can apply:

We are looking BA, MA and PhD students who are enrolled in ERUA member Universities and who have a good command of the English language.

Place: New Bulgarian University, Sofia, Bulgaria.

The letter should briefly explain why you are interested in envy, greed, and jealousy as psychoanalytic phenomena, and how the topic relates to your academic or personal path.

Selection will be based on the depth and relevance of your motivation.
