The ULPGC organises the International Conference on Circular Labour Migration aligned with ERUA priorities

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will hold the International Congress on Circular Labour Migration on 30 and 31 October 2025, link to the project Compass, with the aim of generating a space for academic and institutional reflection, as well as a knowledge base that will culminate in a comprehensive report on the migratory situation of the Canary Islands as a transit territory.

The Congress will be organised around four basic thematic axes:

  • SESSION 1. Legal and social framework, European and African, of labour migrations
  • SESSION 2. Current context of migration and labour routes between Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal and the Canary Islands
  • SESSION 3. Labour opportunities and needs for circular migration
  • SESSION 4. Migration narratives on regular circular migration on both sides of the border

All the information on the Congress, in English, French and Spanish, can be found here

The ULPGC invites ERUA partner universities interested in the project to submit papers to the Congress, in order to share knowledge, approaches and experiences that contribute to a plural and intercultural academic dialogue on migration. The participation of these institutions will enrich the development of the event and the final report, as well as strengthen the joint work within the partnership, boosting its capacity to address common challenges on migration and human rights. Papers may be submitted in English, French or Spanish.

The call for papers is open until 21 July 2025.

The project COMPASS is being developed in a cooperation area that includes the Canary Islands, Gambia, Mauritania and Senegal, key territories in the migratory flows between Africa and Europe. The ULPGC provides a committed academic perspective, aligned with the priorities of the ERUA alliance, promoting collaboration between public institutions, civil society and the university environment.

The main objective of the Compass project is the creation of an Observatory of Human Mobility between the Canary Islands and Africa, which allows to address the migration phenomenon from a holistic perspective and propose innovative solutions that promote circular migration as a strategy to address the challenges in the different phases of the migration process, from origin and transit, to integration in destination countries.

The ULPGC participates in the European COMPASS project of the Interreg MAC 2021-2027 call, together with several Canarian public institutions. Find out more about the project here
