On the 20th of June 2025, New Bulgarian University hosted a friendly football tournament to mark the World Refugee Day. The event was hosted under the ERUA framework and was co-organized with our local partners in ERUA2 Work Package 5 “Achieving Social Change in ERUA’s Local Communities and Regions” – the Bulgarian State Agency for Refugees, the World Health Organization’s Country Office in Bulgaria, UNICEF Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Red Cross.
Three teams – Team Refugees, Team NBU and Team UN Agencies – played three short games with each other to show in practice that sports foster solidarity. In parallel to the tournament there was an information campaign, with representatives of the Bulgarian Ministry of Healthcare and the NGO sector, raising awareness of the importance of immunization.
At the end, prizes were won and awarded by legendary 1994 Bulgarian national team player Ivaylo Yordanov and the participants were addressed by longtime sports medic Mihail Iliev.
