As part of the programme for the ERUA day – 12th of December 2024, today at the SWPS University Dr. Bartosz Kicior gave a lecture “How to dissolve the truth in 7 simple steps? The European experience of disinformation”. Doctor Kicior analyzed disinformation as one of the most serious challenges, which the societies of the European Union currently face. The lecture explored manipulation strategies employed in anti-EU messaging and the techniques used to create manipulated content and fake news.
Bartosz Kicior highlighted that disinformation relies heavily on emotional narratives rooted in fear, polarization, and uncertainty and as such affects significantly the foundations of the democratic processes in contemporary societies. Particular emphasis was placed on the values of the European Union—freedom, democracy, stability, and the rule of law—that are under threat from disinformation campaigns.
Furthermore the lecture also addressed issues related to the right to freedom of information, highlighting the complex relationship between protecting individual rights and countering disinformation campaigns. Dr. Kicior presented current research and shared the experiences of journalists, researchers, and fact-checkers working to combat disinformation within the EU.
