December 2024 to April 2025
Paris 8 University organises an online intensive course: “Quantitative research: requirements and basic statistics”, which will take place between December 2024 and April 2025. The schedule is adapted to the needs of quantitative research – from design to writing results and will be conducted in 6 sessions (5 teaching sessions of 1h 30 each and 1 additional session for evaluation/feed-back.)
It will be a comprehensive, step-by-step course designed to guide students through the process of conducting scientific research. Participants will learn essential skills in research design, data processing, basic statistics, result interpretation, and presentation.
The course coordinator will deliver the content of each module using PowerPoint presentations, answer students’ questions, and assign short exercises for hands-on practice and self-evaluation. For those who do not have their own research data, a dataset will be provided, while others can work with their own collected data.
This course is perfect for students who wish to develop strong research skills and gain hands-on experience in data analysis and scientific reporting.
Learning Objectives: This course will focus on all aspects of quantitative research:
- Conception, Basic concepts (constructs, types of variables) – State of the Art
- Research plan – Hypothesis development – Building a questionnaire
- Descriptive statistics (correlations)
- Basic Inferential statistics (linear regression, Anova, using SPSS software).
- Presenting Results and interpretation – Thesis map
Course Modules:
- Module 1: Designing a scientific research project, introducing key concepts such as constructs, and understanding variable types (nominal, numeric). Students will also learn how to develop and present a “State of the Art”.
- Module 2: Creating a research plan, developing hypotheses, understanding moderation and mediation effects, building questionnaires, selecting validated scales, and adhering to ethical and GDPR standards.
- Module 3: Preparing data for analysis and performing descriptive statistics (correlations) in SPSS. Note: Students will need to download SPSS software. Some universities, like Paris 8, offer free access codes, while others may need to purchase the student version of SPSS for $49 USD (6-month license) from IBM’s website.
- Module 4: Conducting inferential statistics (linear regression, ANOVA, t-test) using SPSS, learning Macro Process, and interpreting results.
- Module 5: Presenting results and interpretations, including how to comment on findings and structure a thesis or article bibliography. Students will also learn how to create a thesis plan.
- Module 6: Evaluation through a short presentation of statistical results and feedback.
This course is perfect for students who wish to develop strong research skills and gain hands-on experience in data analysis and scientific reporting.
