Eighth Annual Doctoral Conference

Sozopol, Bulgaria

June 22-27, 2024

WE invite you to take part in the Eighth Annual Doctoral Conference of New Bulgarian University, that will be held in Sozopol, Bulgaria between the 22nd  and the 27th of June 2024.

The Doctoral Conference organized by New Bulgarian University is a broad interdisciplinary academic forum that presents original research and projects from the entire spectrum of contemporary humanities, social sciences and arts. This event welcomes participation from PhD students and post-docs not only from NBU but also from other partner universities, with the potential to evolve into a joint doctoral conference for the European Research University Alliance (ERUA).

Since its inception in 2016, this conference has been held annually for five consecutive days. This year, the conference is scheduled to take place from June 22nd to June 27th in Sozopol, known as the ancient Greek polis of Apollonia and now one of the most renowned Black Sea resorts. The charming old town of Sozopol boasts medieval churches built over ancient ruins, alongside distinctive wooden houses dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. While the modern hotels provide comfortable accommodation, the beautiful beaches remain relatively uncrowded at this time of the year, despite the sea already being warm.

Structured as an interdisciplinary event, the conference features thematic sessions determined based on the submitted papers. The selection of the papers and their arrangement in sessions is carried out by the Expert Council of the NBU Doctoral School but ERUA colleagues are very welcome to join our team.

Each session is moderated by a distinguished professional – a professor from NBU or another university – who is a specialist in a relevant subject area. The sessions consist of 3 or 4 papers and a discussion. Each speaker has 30 minutes total for presentation and discussion. The working languages of the conference are Bulgarian and English. Each session is in one of the two languages, with English sessions on separate days.

In addition to the thematic sessions, the conference includes round table discussions and artistic events featuring renowned experts and artists. All conference sessions are held in the afternoon, allowing participants to enjoy leisure activities such as beach outings or cultural exploration in the mornings. Common dinners are arranged on select days for all participants.

Accepted papers undergo anonymous review and are subsequently published in Language and Publicity, an electronic journal managed by the Philosophy and Sociology Department at NBU. For doctoral students from NBU, participation with a paper carries credit in various forms: as a course (4 ECTS), as a conference paper (3 ECTS), and potentially as a publication (10-15 ECTS). ERUA partners have the flexibility to establish an appropriate credit system for their doctoral students.

We are looking for PHD or Post-doctoral candidates from ERUA partner universities and associated members in the humanities, social sciences and art, who have command of English or Bulgarian language at the level of B2 proficiency.

If you are interested, please apply no later than the 7th of May 2024 by sending an email to Slavena Nikolovasnikolova@nbu.bg. The email should contain a brief description of the candidate’s interests and background as well as the paper’s title and short summary.
