Here you can find news and information about the series workshops for early-career researchers organized by the Research Support Group in Working Package 2 of the ERUA. We will publish information both on upcoming as well as on already past workshops.
The general aim of the workshops for early career researchers, which will be held twice a year is “to present project ideas for collaborative and/or interdisciplinary research projects or projects that strengthen the links between the research profiles of the Alliance and receive feedback from experienced PIs and research development units.”
The overall objective is to lay the groundwork for the development of the think tank in ERUA and early-career researchers should create the future core of the think tank on Social Sciences and Humanities in interplay with natural and technical sciences and drive the development of alternative indicators. In this light, the workshops will not necessarily focus on EU funding, which has traditionally focused on the natural and technical sciences.
The events are aimed at providing information, tools, opportunities and concrete examples to early-career researchers, facilitating exchange of experience between them and senior researchers and giving early-career researchers the opportunity to present their research focus and ideas for research collaboration and receive feedback and coaching from experienced researchers and research support staff.
The main target group are early-career researchers, so the initial focus is on research collaboration, as young researchers typically do not collaborate with each other, but with senior researchers.
The workshop aims to provide early-career researchers, primarily from the social sciences and humanities (SSH) and the arts, with valuable insights and practical guidance on how to pursue successful non-academic careers after completing their doctoral studies. By providing a platform for experienced professionals to share their journeys and expertise, and by offering tailored workshops, participants will be better prepared to navigate diverse career options outside the traditional academic realm.
The workshop is organized within the framework of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), which includes five recently founded reform universities in France, Denmark, Germany, Greece and Bulgaria. Participation is free for ERUA members. Travel and accommodation may be covered by the ERUA or Erasmus+ programs, depending on the rules of each institution.
The two-day workshop on “Exploring Pathways Beyond Academia” aims to empower early career researchers in SSH and arts disciplines to make informed decisions about their career trajectories. By learning from experienced professionals and participating in practical workshops, participants will be better equipped to embark on successful non-academic journeys and contribute their expertise to various sectors beyond academia.

The workshop is a three-day event, aiming the development and mentoring of PhD students and post doctoral researchers, from all disciplines, whose interest focuses on Scientific Entrepreneurship. It is open to early career researchers, who are thinking about translating their research into commercial innovation, now or in future, or be in a start up, or in a social enterprise, or industry/SME collaboration. It allows also building a network of peers coming from various backgrounds, institutions, disciplines and countries. It offers training/coaching and provides an opportunity for interaction amongst senior and early career researchers, introducing the practicalities and mindset needed to be successful in developing their innovation efforts.
In order to ensure optimal interaction and dialogue, we have limited the workshop to 25-30 participants (5-6 from each university).

The workshop is organized within the framework of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), which includes five young reform universities in France, Denmark, Germany, Greece, and Bulgaria. Place: The workshop will be developed as a hybrid event allowing participants to either participate via zoom or on location at Roskilde University. We hope that as many participants as possible will participate on location to facilitate discussion and networking activities.
Target group: Early-career researchers with motivation to develop and engage in intradisciplinary collaboration
On behalf of the European Reform University Alliance, we would like to invite you to participate in a two-day workshop “Interdisciplinary research and engaging non-academic sectors. The workshop will focus on what kind of collaboration you need to develop an interdisciplinary research approach and how you can build collaboration with both academic and non-academic partners.
The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate exchange of experience around development of interdisciplinary research. Developing an interdisciplinary research approach is increasingly important for strategic research and increasing the impact of research. The workshop will provide an understanding of interdisciplinary research and how to engage with non-academic sectors.
During the two days at we will cover the process that starts with identification of the right partners for your project and move on and work with the design of an interdisciplinary project. The senior researchers that attend will also touch upon some of the challenges that might occur in intradisciplinary research projects and consortiums.
The second workshop from the series of events within the Research Support Group of ERUA-WP2 was held in-person on September 8th to 10th in Sozopol, Bulgara.
The workshop was entitled “Digitalization of research and Open science” and brought together 14 early career researches from the five Universities, as well as participants from other Universities from Italy, Germany, Romania and Greece. Within the different sessions 6 senior researchers shared insights, their own experience and practical tips on how to use the different opportunities that digitalization presents for young members of the academia both in the field of research with the different aspects and applications of Open science, as well as regarding different tools that could be practically used in building and maintaining scientific and research networks and teaching in the digital era. The workshop was moderated by Eduard Marinov with the support of Christiana Stoimenova and Kristina Stoyanova from the NBU. The workshop facilitated both the exchange of experience in the different aspects of digitalization in academia between early-career researchers and senior researchers, as well as served as the start of a dialogue for increased collaboration and network building among young researchers within the ERUA. The participating early career researches represented both a very broad scope of scientific fields and research background in social sciences and humanities, technical and nature sciences, as well as different stages in academic development ranging from Ph.D. Candidates to Associate Professors. Besides the comprehensive and very interesting discussions based on their questions within the sessions with senior researchers, the young scientists had the opportunity to present their research profiles, formulate their specific research ideas, and take part of some practical activities such as application of gamification and using VR in teaching and research, as well as in dedicated collaborative exercises on the possible utilization of digitalization in their own research and collaboration and on linking open access, open educational data and citizenship science in practice.
The workshop was held in parallel with the activities of the 16-th edition of the Early Fall School of Semiotics “Digital Transformation of Higher Education: Semiotic and Interdisciplinary Perspectives” (https://semiotics.nbu.bg/en/early-fall-school-of-semiotics-efss) organized by the Southeast European Centre for Semiotic Studies at New Bulgarian University, as well as with the ERUA Research group annual workshop “Digital Transformation of Research and Practice in the Reform Universities: Past, Present and Future” (https://erua-eui.eu/2022/07/04/second-call-for-participation-digital-transformation-of-research-and-practice-in-reform-universities-past-present-and-future/), providing opportunities for early-career researchers to also participate in them.
This was the second of a series of workshops that will be taking place throughout the time-frame of the implementation of all ERUA activities and cover a broad scope of topics ranging from the way networking works, through the different possibilities of interdisciplinarity, the digitalization of science, the funding opportunities for collaborative research, to specific scientific areas in which the ERUA participants have common portfolios. The first workshop from the series of events within the Research Support Group of ERUA-WP2 was held virtually on March 23rd and 24th.
The workshop was entitled “Participating in and creating scientific networks” and brought together 18 early career researches from the five Universities. Within the different sessions 8 senior researchers shared insights, their own experience and practical tips on how to build, maintain and utilize the benefits of participating in both formal and informal scientific and research networks. The workshop was moderated by Robert Pedersen (RUC) and Eduard Marinov (NBU) with the support of Frida Valles (RUC). The workshop facilitated both the exchange of experience in building international research networks between early-career researchers and senior researchers, as well as served as the start of a dialogue for increased collaboration and network building among young researchers within the ERUA. The participating early career researches represented both a very broad scope of scientific fields and research background in social sciences and humanities, technical and nature sciences, as well as different stages in academic development ranging from Ph.D. Candidates to Associate Professors. Besides the comprehensive and very interesting discussions based on their questions within the sessions with senior researchers, the young scientists had the opportunity to present their research profiles, formulate their specific research ideas, and take part of a practical exercise within which three specific ideas for interdisciplinary research collaboration emerged.
This was just the first of a series of workshops that will be taking place throughout the next 2 years and will cover a broad scope of topics ranging from the way networking works, through the different possibilities of interdisciplinarity, the digitalization of science, the funding opportunities for collaborative research, to specific scientific areas in which the ERUA participants have common portfolios.
